Sound Burger

1983

At the height of the Walkman craze in the early 1980s, Audio Technica debuted the AT-727 Sound Burger, a portable turntable. Much like cassettes in a Walkman, the Sound Burger let users play records anywhere, as long as they didn’t want to do anything that made the Walkman so versatile, like walking… It could only play on flat surfaces.

Additionally, users had to haul around their bulky vinyl and the unprotected turntable left records vulnerable. These days the Sound Burger is sought by audiophiles for its near-mythic sound quality.

Update: In 2022 Audio-Technica launched a limited edition retro Sound Burger in celebration of their 60th anniversary. It sold out globally in days! Now Audio-Technica has announce that this fan favorite is returning to the company’s regular lineup. WhatHifi - an extensive review. Buy one here: Audio-Technica
