Psychological debriefing

1983-2007

Psychological debriefing emerged during the 1980s and became a standard practice after major disasters. Its purpose was to prevent long-term psychological effects such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With this method, a person who had recently experienced a traumatic event participated in a professionally led group session within 24 hours of the trauma.

Research after the 9/11 terrorist attacks showed the method to be ineffective and could actually increase the risk of PTSD and depression. In the aftermath of traumatic events, support from family, friends, and trusted colleagues is preferable to formalized treatment by trained professionals.
