Monoski

1980s

This wide ski, which uses the same bindings as alpine skis, never really caught on, although you could say that the monoski reached its “peak” in the 1980s. When snowboards arrived in the 1990s, the monoski was sentenced to death, and its two leading manufacturers quickly entered the snowboard market.

A ski rental operator at a large alpine resort recently told us: “The monoski, haha, yes, it was a failure. It was so dorky. It could possibly work in powder, but I don’t understand why anyone would use it on regular slopes. Though I actually saw three monoskis this year, so maybe it’s making a comeback.”
